Kenya's Climate Conditions

Kenya's climate is fairly warm throughout most of the country. However, most of the country is at altitude, which means hot, sunny days - with strong sun - and cool to cold nights Kenya in simpler words can be said to enjoy a tropical climate. Exceptions to this are the coastal belt and the northern parts of Kenya, which are generally arid and hot. It is hot and humid at the coast, temperate inland and very dry in the north and northeast parts of the country.

The coastal weather depends on the Trade Winds, with rain expected during June July and October as well as during October, November and, sometimes, December. The hottest months during Kaskazi - the hot northeastern Trade winds - are from December through to April. Then the wind changes to the Kusi - the cool wet southern Trades.

On the plateau, the weather is hot and dry with temperatures during the day of between 25 C and 30C all year-round. During the night, the temperatures can be as cool as 5C during the months preceding the short rains. Inland rainfall ranges from 500mm in the south to 250mm in the far north.

The average rainfall in Mombasa is 1200mm and the average daily temperature ranges from 27C to 31C.The average annual temperature for the coastal town of Mombasa (altitude 17 metres) is 30.30 Celsius maximum and 22.40 Celsius minimum, the capital city, Nairobi (altitude 1,661 metres) 25.20 Celsius maximum and 13.60 Celsius minimum, Eldoret (altitude 3,085) 23.60 Celsius maximum and 9.50 Celsius minimum, Lodwar (altitude) 506 metres) and the drier north plain lands 34.80 Celsius maximum and 23.70 Celsius minimum.

There is plenty of sunshine all the year round and summer clothes are worn throughout the year. However, it is usually cool at night and early in the morning.

There are 2 rainy seasons, the long rains occur from April to June and short rains from October to December. The rainfall is sometimes heavy and when it does come it often falls in the afternoons and evenings. The hottest period is from February to March and coldest in July to August.

The annual migration of wildlife between Serengeti National Park in Tanzania and Maasai Mara National Park in Kenya takes place between June and September. The migration of almost two million wildebeest, zebras and other species is nature's greatest spectacle on earth. The animal trek has been captured by filmmakers worldwide.
