KENYA FILM COMMISSION AND NATIONAL FILM AND VIDEO OF SOUTH AFRICA SIGN A FILM PACT

Kenya Film Commission (KFC) and the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) today signed a memorandum of understanding to fortify film activities in the two countries.  The 14 clause agreement highlighted areas of mutual cooperation ranging from film co-production, festivals, training and institutional strengthening, among others. This is the second pact Kenya is signing in Cannes Film Festival, the first being the KFC/CNC agreement entered in 2011.Under the agreement, the two institutions have committed to support cinema activities to grow film in both countries.

Speaking during the signing ceremony witnessed by senior officials from both countries, the KFC CEO, Mr. Peter Mutie said that the two countries have commonalities in film production that will be enhanced the pact. “Kenya and South Africa share similarities in locations and festivals, which if harnessed jointly will yield better benefits for the film industry in the two countries,” said the CEO.

While acknowledging that the industry in Africa does not match Europe and America, Mr. Mutie said that Africa will gain ground if the continent implements joint film programmes, as a way enhancing the continent’s footprint in global film industry. Zama Mkosi, the CEO of NFVF said that the agreement will and allow filmmakers from both the countries an opportunity to access facilities as well as conducting business together. She challenged the film makers from both countries to utilise the opportunity availed by the closer link and come up with joint programmes to grow filming in the continent. “We are going to support viable film products that involve producers from Kenya and South Africa,” said Zama

The Kenyan Ambassador to France, HE Salma Hamed, who was present during the ceremony said that the Kenya Mission in France will support with information provision to the film fraternity in Europe in general and France in particular. “ We will use our location in France and elsewhere in Europe the disseminate useful information about the filming opportunities in Kenya and South Africa and facilitate interested film makers to join our local producers and make quality film that can compete globally in forums like Cannes, among others. She said that unlike many other countries, Kenya is unique as it offers a combination of exciting and multiple film locations and the government is committed to ensure that all the requisite support is provided to ensure success.

Mr. Christopher Foot, the Chairman of KFC said that the agreement was a demonstration of how two African countries can work together to build common for for film production. “We need to complement each other to achieve more results,” said the Chairman. he ceremony was attended by the Director General of the Ministry of Arts and Culture, Mr. Sibusiso Xaba, NFVF Council Chairperson Ms. Mmabatho Ramagoshi, Chief Executive Officer Brand Kenya Board, Ms Mary Kimonye, among other senior government officials and film producers from both countries.

CALL FOR ABSTRACTS FOR THE INAUGURAL NATIONAL FILM CONFERENCE & EXHIBITION

The National Film Conference & Exhibition, a film and media conference to be held in Friday and Saturday,21st-22nd 2013 is calling for abstracts from the film and media industry, investment industry and education sector. SPOTLIGHT ON KENYA AT THE 2013 CANNES FILM FESTIVAL

This year, the Cannes Film Market has offered to focus on Kenya.This provides a great opportunity for Kenya and specifically the Film industry to expose its work, connect and network with the rest of the world. Kenya as a country of focus, will provide an opportunity for the Kenyan Film Makers to promote local film productions, access professional training that will be provided at Cannes Film Festival, access international commercial distribution firms, participate at the filmmakers’ networking sessions, and sign MoU for student exchange programs for our local universities.

For the first time this year, from the 15th to the 26th of May, the Kenya Film Commission is happy to announce that Kenya is going to have its own Pavilion N° 114, where Kenyan producers, filmmakers and professionals of the film industry will be welcome to showcase their work and run their professional meetings. This effort has been taken in accordance to the signed cooperation agreement and to maximize on the great opportunity that Kenya has been offered by France to be the Country in Focus at the Cannes Film Festival where Kenya will showcase its creative dynamism within the artistic and economic field.

A Producer’s Network forum organised by the Cannes Film Market is going to take place on 19th May, 2013. Six Kenyan producers have been invited and fully sponsored to participate in the Producer’s Network forum by the Kenyan and French Government. The forum is expected to provide a platform for the producers to talk,expose the cinematographic industry of Kenya and  showcase their  work to about thirty French and internationally renowned film producers interested in African projects. The event will enable our young and experienced film professionals to broaden their scope of film distribution and expertise on film production, exchange of information, access to international financial support, and finding co-producers.

RÉSIDENCE DU FESTIVAL

In 1998, the Festival de Cannes created the Cinéfondation to inspire and support the next generation of international filmmakers. Since then, with the help of the Festival, the Cinéfondation has developed complementary programmes to help achieve its goal.

The 27th session of the Residence Du Festival will take place from October 1, 2013 to February 15, 2014. The selection is open to young filmamkers from all over the world who are working on their first or second feature film. A jury selects 6 candidates for each of the two four and and a half month sessions per year. The candidates are selected on the strength of the short films or the 1st feature that they have already directed as well as on their planned feature and the reasons why they wish to participate in the Residence programme...click here for more details

FIRST EDITION OF ACTORS MONOLOGUE CHALLENGE 2013

The ACTORS MONOLOGUE CHALLENGE is a live stage event where Kenyan actors showcase their skills in front of a live audience and industry professionals. Also, it’s the only show where the audience votes for their favorite performance. 1st Actors Monologue Challenge – will take place on 29th January 2013 at Club Sylk opposite Nation Media Center from 6:30pm to 9:30pm. KENYAN FILMS & CO-PRODUCTIONS AT ROTTERDAM INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL 2013

KENYA FILM CLASSIFICATION BOARD

The Kenya Film Classification Board must examine all films produced and classify (censor) them and given them an age appropriate rating. The Board also notifies all cinema theatres and video libraries, shops, vendors and shows of the change in licenses to the new film regulatory licenses done by the board. The Kenya Film Classification Board also ensures that films are distributed on DVD’s/CD’s that are affixed with the correct classification label. Have a look at the link


Cyprus Film Days 2013 Call for Entries

The Cyprus Ministry of Education and Culture and the Rialto Theatre announce that Call for Entries for the 11th CYPRUS FILM DAYS - International Film Festival 2013, is now open. The festival, which is being held for the 11th time this year, will host for the 3rd consecutive year a separate international competition section entitled "Glocal Images", in which filmmakers from around the globe and Cyprus are invited to submit their fiction films. This year's festival will take place from the 19th to the 28th of April 2013 in Nicosia and in Limassol as in previous years. Deadline for entries is 8th February 2013.
